ALTERNATE FEE ARRANGEMENTS

We are pleased to offer flexible billing solutions to suit each client and each matter. 

Options include traditional hourly billing or flat fee. In certain limited cases we are open to contingency fee arrangements (though many clients prefer traditional hourly billing).

We believe in transparency - our current hourly rates are set out below, together with flat fee ranges for Civil Litigation and many Business Law services. Please contact us for a free initial consultation and a free, no-obligation fee estimate  for your particular situation.

HOURLY RATES

Unless otherwise agreed, matters are billed on an hourly basis in accordance with the time and effort expended, and the seniority of the professionals working on the file. Our current hourly rates (which are subject to change upon reasonable notice) are as follows: 
  • Senior Lawyers $365-$450/hr
  • Intermediate Lawyers $350-$400/hr
  • Junior Lawyers $300/hr
  • Senior Paralegals $100-$175/hr
  • Intermediate Paralegals $85-$125/hr
  • Junior Paralegals $75/hr

NOTES

  1. Court appearances requiring more than 4 hours may be billed at a full-day rate of 8 hours.
  2. Please bear in mind that in Ontario litigation, the unsuccessful party may be ordered to pay a portion of the legal fees and expenses of the successful party.
  3. Our legal fees do no include disbursements made on your behalf such as expert fees, court filing fees, scanning/photocopying, travel etc. To learn more about how court fees and other out of pocket costs are handled, see below.
  4. Please note that all fees and some disbursements are subject to 13% HST.

FLAT FEES

We offer the option of flat fees for certain types of litigation and many of our business law services. Our current Schedule of Flat Fees is set out below. These fees are illustrative only and actual flat fees will be negotiated based on your particular situation. Please contact us directly for a free no-obligation quote.

SMALL CLAIMS COURT MATTERS

  • Initial 30-minute consultation - FREE
  • For Plaintiffs, a simple debt collection demand letter - $149
  • Case Assessment - includes document review, client in-person intake interview, case assessment, legal research, consultation and review - from $500
  • Case assessment and demand letter package price -from $600
  • Draft or amend, file and serve one Claim or Defence - from $700
  • Draft Defendant's Claim if we drafted the Defence - $200
  • Draft Defendant's Claim if we did not draft the Defence - $700
  • Settlement Conference - Review and prepare evidence; prepare witness; Prepare, file and serve Witness List to all parties; Produce documents for settlement conference; Prepare and attend Rule 13 Settlement Conference; set down matter for trial if necessary and attend - from $600
  • Trial Preparation and Attendance includes: Review and prepare evidence; Prepare and serve required witness summons forms; Telephone/ in person interview lay witness; Telephone/in person interview expert witness/consultant; Prepare for trial including opening and closing statements; Prepare two witnesses (plus client) for cross-examination; Prepare and produce trial exhibits; Legal research update; Trial attendance (one day); from $1,500

LANDLORD TENANT

  • Case Assessment Document Review fee - from $500
  • Two applications filled out and filed, $500; each additional application - $275
  • One Day Tribunal Appearance $500-600

DISBURSEMENTS

Disbursements (out of pocket expenses and charges related to your file other than our fees) are always charged at cost - we do not mark up expenses incurred on behalf of clients. We also charge for some expenses internal to the firm - not administrative overhead expenses, but expenses related directly to a matter.

Out-of-pocket expenses may include items such as: couriers, scanning, photocopying, printing and binding of exhibits, court filing fees, transcription fees, title searches, government administrative fees, process servers, registry search charges, travel expenses, and the fees of expert witnesses and private investigators. In some cases, out of pocket disbursement can be substantial.

The following shows the rates currently charged for internal disbursements. These prices usually apply to small volumes; where large volumes are required we outsource the work and pass on volume discounts to clients.
